In one of the best matches ever witnessed at Wembley Stadium, Swindon beat Leicester 4-3 in the First Division Play-Off Final of 1993, to gain promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club's history. Despite taking a three goal lead in an eleven minute spell starting just before halftime through player manager Glenn Hoddle, Craig Maskell and Shaun Taylor, the Town were pegged back to 3-3 in Leicester's own eleven minute spell that started just five minutes after Taylor had scored the Town's third. With just five minutes remaining, Steve White was adjudged to have been fouled in the area, and Paul Bodin converted the resulting penalty to win the Town promotion.

Two years earlier, the two sides met in a relegation clash in one of Glenn Hoddle's first games as Town boss, and the teams produced another seven goal epic. Town midfield hardman Steve Foley scored a hat-trick, and tried to claim another that was accredited as an own goal to Leicester's Tony James - Swindon eventually winning the game 5-2, a result that ensured their First Division status.

Three matches at Leicester between 1987 and 1990 were dubbed as the "Nightmare on Filbert Street" trilogy by Town fanzine Bring The Noise!, when in each match the Town took the lead, only to squander it having had players dismissed amidst some terrible refereeing performances. In November 1987, the Town were 1-0 up through Bobby Barnes before Steve Foley was sent off just before half-time for a second bookable offence - despite this, Jimmy Quinn extended the lead to 2-0 midway through the second half. Swindon held this lead right up until the 82nd minute, when substitute Ramsey pulled one back, and they went on to concede two more goals in the last two minutes to lose the game 3-2. Then, in October 1988, Swindon took a three goal lead in the first 26 minutes, before Foley was again sent off just after half time. In a crazy ten minute spell in the second half, Gary McAllister netted a controversial penalty, Phil King scored an own goal, and McAllister scored again to level the scores - shortly after, midfielder Tom Jones was also dismissed, though the Town managed to hold out for the draw with nine men. Incredibly, the pattern continued in 1990, when Swindon were reduced to ten men just three minutes into the game when David Kerslake received his marching orders, but the Town still took a two goal lead through Duncan Shearer and Steve White. Ally Mauchlen reduced the arrears with nineteen minutes to go, before Marc North equalised for the Foxes in the last minute to complete a strange trio of matches.
